Jingle Bell Jog 10k Race Report

So this morning I had a race to run.  I was so excited to run this race because I knew my tempo runs had been spot on and even though my running had taken a slight hit in the past weeks, I just had a feeling.

Last night I ordered pizza.  I'm finding more and more that pizza is a great pre-race fuel.  A couple of slices and I'm know I'm going to be in for a great run in the morning.  Except last night my stomach was fighting me something fierce.  I went to bed feeling sick to my stomach and it wasn't from nerves.  I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make it through the night without getting sick.

At 12:30 the hubs comes to bed and starts asking me questions about parking, when the race started etc.  I was a peeved that he woke me up but I managed to fall back to sleep and didn't wake up against until 6:20 something.  My alarm was set for 6:30 so to wake up 10 minutes early didn't bother me.  I got ready for the race.

The race started at 8 and I met my mom there at 7:30.  We walked around for a few minutes, then went back to our cars.  I had to take off my sweat pants and she had to put her phone up. We then took our Gatorade pre-fuels that we had, hit the porta pottys and then the announcement came that we could go ahead and get in line.  A few instructions and we were off.  I told my mom that I would see her at the end and I took off.

Mile 1 - 8:06
Mile 2 - 8:10
Mile 3 - 7:59 - Right before I hit this mile I saw the hubs sitting in traffic and I was waving at him like a mad woman.  I never get to see the hubs or my kids while racing because they always meet me at the finish line, so this put a huge pep in my step.  He saw me waving and opened the sunroof to wave at me.  I felt like I was big stuff.
Mile 4 - 8:17 - It was during this mile that I took an apple cinnamon hammer gel.
Mile 5 - 8:22
Mile 6 - 8:08 - During this mile a girl came up beside me and I looked over at her and said, "You are pushing me out of my comfort zones, thank you for that."   She said, "You need to help me get the girl in front of us."  We ended up going around a curve where I had to move behind her a little and that's when she left me.  Oh, well.
.29 - 7:34
Total miles: 6.29
Time: 51:14
Calories burned: 646
Average pace: 8:09

The look on my face when I turned the corner to head into the finisher's shoot and saw 50:XX on the clock was priceless.  I tried my hardest to finish before 51:XX came up but as you can see I didn't make it but I squashed and I mean squashed my Goal A time.  What's really funny is that I told the hubs before I left the house that I planned on finishing the race between 52 and 53 minutes so to finish in 51:14 minutes was AMAZING and my family was there to see me cross the finish line.  I was so happy to see my girls and the hubs afterwards.

We walked the course backwards for a couple of blocks to see if I could find my mom, but the want of water was more overwhelming than the need to see how she was doing so we backtracked to the refreshments tent and I grabbed a bottle of water for myself and for my mom and then just headed down to the finishing line to wait for her to come in.  She had a goal of finishing in 75 minutes and she/I was pleasantly surprised when she came in at 70 minutes.  I was so very proud of her.

Now that I have a new PR in the 10k, I can't wait to race another 5K and also run my 3rd half for some new PRs in those.

Angela :)
